What is the DELE A2 and what is it for?

The DELE A2 (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language, level A2) is an official certificate proving a basic level of Spanish. It's issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education. It does not expire.

What is it for?

What does the exam test?

The DELE A2 measures Spanish across four sections:

  1. Reading comprehension (60 min, 4 tasks, 25 questions)
  2. Listening comprehension (40 min, 4 tasks, 25 questions)
  3. Written expression and interaction (45 min, 2 tasks)
  4. Spoken expression and interaction (12 min exam + 12 min preparation, 3 tasks)

Sections are grouped into two blocks. To pass, you need at least 60% in each block.

How much does it cost?

The price varies by country. In Spain, it usually costs €130–160. In Latin America it can be lower. Check the registration site of the exam center where you sign up.

Where can I take it?

At any Instituto Cervantes accredited exam center. Test dates are held several times a year in over 100 countries. Register online at examenes.cervantes.es.

When are results released?

About 3 months after the exam. You'll receive an email when they're available. The physical diploma is mailed afterward.

Is it hard?

A2 is a basic, not advanced, level. With 80–100 hours of focused study, most motivated adults pass. The speaking test makes people most nervous, but it's also the most predictable: questions are always about your own daily life.

Who doesn't need the DELE A2?

People who already have a DELE B1 or higher, or who completed official Spanish-language schooling, generally don't need to sit the A2.
